The Mary McClellan Hospital had its cornerstone laid on 4-Jul-1917. The first and only patient on opening day, January 5, 1919, was Mrs. J Smith. She was admitted to room A. The first baby was Ella Mary Shannon born on February 26, 1919. Beds in the public ward cost $3 per day, while a private room cost $7. Visiting hours were from 3:00 to 4:00 pm and from 7:00 to 8:00 pm. Patients were fed from a nearby vegetable garden.
